Scholarly Activity
Residents are expected to participate in scholarly activity. In general, there are four main categories of scholarly activity: administrative, education, quality improvement (QI), and research. There can be substantial overlaps among these four domains, however, in general, these four domains are defined as:
1. Administrative: Administrative work includes participating in important local and national committees, development/maintenance of durable programs or regimens.
2.Education: Education work includes development of education tools such as handbooks or development of durable programs.
3. Quality Improvement: Quality improvement projects are projects that aim to systematically improve the ways care is delivered to patients.
4. Research: Hypothesis driven, systematic investigation to establish facts, reach new conclusions, or validate existing conclusions.
All faculty and residents are expected to participate in scholarly activity and:
1. Earn at least 10 points based upon the point system developed below (table).
2. Attend 1 research meeting.
3. Present scholarly work at departmental conferences.
4. Develop aims for a scholarly activity, timeline for project, and deadline for project completion.

PGY1: Identify an area of scholarly activity and faculty member mentor. Develop AIM/hypothesis, project timeline, and write-up for project plans.
PGY 2-3: Present scholarly activity project protocol at surgery conference. Work out project kinks and initiate project.
PGY 4-5: Complete project and submit for presentation/publication. Present completed project at surgery conference.
